Whether this is your first child or fourth, your pregnancy will live in your heart & mind forever.

Of course, you are probably focusing right now on your hopes and dreams for your child. And once your baby arrives you will be consumed with cuddles and caring for your bundle of joy.

My husband and I pregnant at 32 weeks with our son William.

And as each day passes, and your body changes, many moms want a maternity portrait to capture the moment.

It’s an amazing way to celebrate what our bodies are capable of & then be able to share the moment with our children when they are older. And if you already have a child or two, maternity portraits are also a great opportunity to help your children understand change is on the way!

I still remember my maternity portrait. As professional photographers we tried to save a little money by asking a friend to take them for us. She did a great job!

It was just the wrong time.

You see, I was only 32 weeks at the time of our portrait because I was photographing weddings after that and didn’t have a weekend free for the session. And while I felt HUGE – the baby bump isn’t quite round enough at that stage.

Thankfully, I took a selfie in the mirror when I was 38 weeks after photographing my last wedding – and my son was born at 39 weeks. It’s out of focus and grainy (cell pics weren’t nearly as good 8 years ago) but I still love looking at it and it is my favorite photo showing my pregnancy.

So here are a few tips to help you get the great maternity portraits you want (and not make the same mistakes I did)! 🙂

3 Tips for Better Maternity Photos

  1. Look for curve-hugging outfits
(even the most body conscious will appreciate how great your pregnant curves look in form-fitted outfits)
  2. Pamper Yourself & Dress Up
(I rent maternity gowns for my couples but you can find them on Amazon too – and a little makeup makes all the difference)
  3. Aim for 34+ weeks
(unless you are having twins or have a reason to expect an earlier delivery, later is better for that perfect round belly – and it helps to have a week or two to reschedule for weather if trying for outdoors)

Hope these tips help calm some nerves and make it easier to plan your picture-perfect session – many happy wishes to all the growing families out there!
