Dog Portrait Tips

I love working with pets just as much as I do children.

And in many ways, photographing them is very similar!

You want them to be a little tired, well fed, and it always helps to have a couple of toys or treats to get their attention 😉

But there are a few dog specific tips I share with my couples and families that want to include their furry kids in their pictures to help us have a successful and fun session.

Here are my Top 5 Dog Portrait Tips for you:

1. Take a Walk

It’s always a good idea to wear out your dog a little before the photos so they are more likely to WANT to sit or lay down for a few photos.

2. Bring a Friend

This allows us to take them for a short walk if they don’t want to hold still or securely hold them out of the pictures so we can get a few without them.

3. Get a Collar that Blends in with their Fur

Not all dogs can behave off leash, and some areas require leashes at all times, so it’s best to have one that won’t distract from the photos too much.

4. Don’t wear Black or Dark Colors

It seems obvious, but unless you want pictures that show fur all over your clothes it’s better to wear lighter colors. (yes, I can edit it out, but those hours cost extra 😉

5. Treats or Toys for Rewards or Distraction

While some pups will sit on command, most will get bored with that after about 15 min. So it’s a good idea to bring any training tools you have that will help them either sit still or look at me – but not want to run at me to get it 😉
