Maternity Portrait Tips | Props

First, congratulations on expecting a little bundle of joy!!!

It’s an exciting, and a bit overwhelming, to prepare for such a big change in your life. But the great part is that the photos can be the easy part.

Beyond coordinating outfits with your spouse, there really are a lot of fun options so I put together this quick maternity portrait tip guide to help you narrow down your choices.

A few flowers in your hair, the ultrasound photo, a family pet, or sports themed props such as baseball bats or football jerseys are just a few examples of fun ways to incorporate your passions. And that’s really what you want to do with any props, incorporate more about yourselves and your interests along with maybe a few hopes or dreams for your child (or children ;).

That’s a lot of choices, I know, so to help you here are the maternity portrait tips that should make those decisions a little bit easier – you have enough decisions to make right now after all!

5 TIPS for Maternity Portrait Props

1.    Avoid trends. While you might have recently seen a few photos that incorporate a specific prop, try not to only focus on trends that will look really dated in 20 years’ time (remember the heart hands??). Classic & a little sexy is generally the better way to go.

2.    Be realistic. It’s easy to go wild when thinking of a theme for your photo session. You should decide on one that you can actually find props for. For example, if you want to use seasonal props, try to find them in that season (it’s easier to find spring decor before the summer arrives).

3.    Size matters. There are some larger props that work really well in photo sessions such as using your car or home as a background piece. However, there are some larger props that can take away from the beauty of the photograph altogether (like a giant stuffed animal). Make sure that your prop enhances the photo and doesn’t detract from it. (and I can help you with that)

4.    Make it meaningful. If you have a favorite quilt or family heirloom that you treasure, let’s try and incorporate it into your photos! This way your pictures will have more meaning to you and your family.

5.    Use what you have. Make the current season work to your advantage by using what’s available. Leaves in the fall and snow in the winter makes for amazing props in photos and don’t cost a thing.

Remember, using props can be the perfect addition to your photos but make sure that they don’t become the main focus.
